In the autumn of 1871, Los Angeles erupted in one of the darkest nights in its history. A Chinatown tong war spilled into the streets, leaving an innocent rancher dead and a deputy wounded. By nightfall, a mob of more than five hundred men swept through Chinatown, torching buildings and looting without mercy. When they discovered the gangs had fled, their fury turned on the innocent and defenseless—lynching and mutilating nineteen Chinese residents, including a young boy. The courts refused to act.
